Utah - Road trip

April 18th - 24th 2011

A last minute change of plans.  I found myself flying into Salt Lake city, Utah at midnight and being collected by Greg to stay at a couch surfers for the night.  Greg and Rose are currently on an 8 month road trip across America and then North to Alaska and I've been lucky enough to join them for a couple of weeks of it.

First stop was Arches National Park. Mum had emailed to say her, Dad and Andrew had visited here many years ago and she had loved it. She wasn't wrong, it was truly spectacular.  As the name suggests formed of many natural arches and beautiful big red turrets of rock. Utah understandably is famous for climbers as there is just a never ending abundance of choices of big sandstone spires.  Not only for climbers we had a great time camping by the river and making day trip hikes through the area.  A first for me to see such beautiful red rock spires, arches, red dirt and lots and lots of rock.  Unable to climb my imagination was running wild of possible routes, though I did bring my climbing harness I did have a quick conversation with a couple who had climbed the highest point in arches and it sounded amazing including a 30 foot free rappel down to finish (perhaps one for the future if I can meet some climbing partners and make another trip out here).  There were Jeeps everywhere and we found out it was the yearly week long jeep festival in Moab so hence the reason everything was so busy and there were Jeeps absolutely everywhere.

The night of camping was made extra interesting because of the massive storm that brought huge winds and rain in the middle of the night, blowing dust everywhere and threatening to blow Gregs tent away, so it was decided he and Rose would pack up their tent and we would all make ourselves extra cosy in his 3 person mountaineering tent for the rest of the night, completely covered in dust and wet not much sleepw as had

The next day we headed off to Dead horse state park for a hike around the top of steep canyons and cliffs.  http://www.utah.com/stateparks/dead_horse.htm

Driving onto Canyon lands we were finding it difficult to find places to camp due to Easter weekend. We stopped at Needles Outpost a private campground still close to the park opening where we meet a rather unusual character Tracey who ran the campground, its was almost like she had had too much sun and out there who can blame her, still we found a space and got our shower coupons so we were happy.  We did a quick drive to the info centre and got the last good campsite inside the needles part of the park allowing us to do a 2 day backcountry hiking and camping.

The following morning we drove a 4wd track as far as the fully laden jeep would take us then walked a bit further for a great view point.

Then it was off to the start of our backcountry adventure.  With a pack weight of 21kg (mostly due to lack of water in the park we had to take most in) the sun was hot and I got burnt in Arches NP so I was keeping covered up which made it hot but bearable.  We managed to take a small detour when we missed our turnoff to our camp area so added an extra few miles to the day but in the afternoon we were set up inside such a beautiful place. Feeling like we had the place to ourselves (each campsite only accommodates one lot of campers)

The following day we did about a 10mile (17km) loop out to druid arch then included Chesler park loop which was lots of fun.  A little bit of rock scrambling, jumping, squeezing through small tunnels and thin cracks it was an early start but worth it giving us the late afternoon off to read and relax surrounded by such beautiful sandstone spires.  Water in this area is very limited and we had one place to pump water for the whole day and night.  When Gregs pump failed an hour of trying then it was back to the old way of water filtration tablets and waiting 4 hours so it was water conservation for most of the days hike, less then ideal but with clouds around we all got through fine.

The rain returned that night and continued on and off making it a wet start to the day including packing up a wet tent and hiking the last 3 miles back to the carpark in non stop rain.  All part of the fun, remembering all my hikes back in Tassie in the rain, I'm pretty used to being wet so wasn't that fased.  What was fun and a bit problematic was the rain turned the path into a river and waterfalls of water fell all around us as the water slid easily off the rocks and the dry dirt wasn't able to soak up the constant water falling.  Some inventive jumps and side steps and eventually walking through the path/river made us wet by the time we reached the car.  Now sitting in a cafe in Monticello found out our WOOFing hosts mixed up dates and thought we weren't arriving until Tuesday so they don't want us to come until 6pm, 6hours to kill and its still raining!!!!

Je t'aime' sirop d'érable

I LOVE MAPLE SYRUP!!!!

15th, 16th, 17th April

Our time here in Quebec has been extra special, because this is the home of maple syrup.  It doesn't get any better than being able to eat fresh maple syrup ice cream, maple syrup muffins, maple syrup on a spoon, waffles anything you can imagine.  Even maple syrup taffee, where it is frozen in the snow, rolled and you eat it off a stick, total sweetness rush but yum yum yum......

Montreal is known as the best club and party scene in Canada. Of course we had to check it out!
Vic and I spent the mid morning wandering the Parc du Mont Royal where the weather gave us hail stones then snow and then finally rain.  So amazing walking through the scary spindly forest as the snow was falling imagining it covered in snow and beatuiful in summer full of greenery. We really are out of season here.  As the rain kept falling, Phil and his mate Jean Francoeur (JF) came and picked us up and we went to a lovely little bar to start out the afternoon with a couple of cocktails.  We all went for dinner at a pub (Phil's sister, boyfriend and the 4 of us) and watched Montreal win the first playoff in hockey, a very loud and excited bar it was.

With the rain still falling we went into the city to dance the night away.  The night life is so popular every club had a line up and being a Saturday night meant they were really long.  We waited and got into Rouge where we stayed and danced until 3am when they closed.

I hadn't properly tried Poutine yet, so the guys took us to the best poutine place in the city and again there was a line up, selling only poutine open 24 hours, this place must be good! It was and a great way to soak up the alcohol at 4am in the morning.  Home for 5am yes Montreal was proving to be the party city!

A late start on the Sunday due to being tired, I wasn't hung over actually just danced pretty sober most of the night but with it not raining we took advantage of walking the streets, went into the notre dame, china town and down by the water front.  A really big city with perhaps a little less character than Quebec city and Ottawa, a fun place to spend the weekend :-)

I got the greyhound bus sunday night, saying see you later to Victoria was hard, she is off on her own travels and then moves to the UK, doing what I did but in a different order. Knowing she will have a blast and we will meet up again somewhere in this world I'm sure.  A freak snow storm appeared just as the bus took off and made the going slow, not to mention our bus breaking down and us all having to swap to a new bus, at least the boarder control went smoothly.  So here I am once again in New York, who would have thought twice in 3 weeks ha ha :-)

Bonjour Quebec City

20th, 21st, 22nd April

Sadly Vic and I parted ways with Brittany who could no longer join us as we continued our bus trip to Old Quebec City.  6 hours and mostly rainy we just slept and used the free wifi access on the bus (how times have changed).  Arriving to a rainy Quebec City wasn't the brightest start but we found the hostel easy enough and went for an evening walk.  It didn't take too long for us to be saturated so armed with groceries we headed back to cook dinner, hoping the next day would bring sunshine.

Perhaps a little naive I hadn't really thought about the mix of French and english that Quebec has.  In fact it was little to no English but all French.  Really like stepping outside Canada and into a European France atmosphere.  A great chance for me to practise as I love the language and haven't been exposed to the pressure of being the only person able to speak any french in a while, I got buy practised loads and continued to fall in love with the language inspiring me more to continue with my study once I'm back in Vancouver.

Up early for a run we were lucky the sun was out, though so was the cold wind.  We tried to run along the waterfront of the Saint Laurence River but due to upgrades to the path we were diverted.  We ended up near the still working army barracks and tried to run through to reach the water, just as Vic ran through a barrier gate a very flustered looking guard jumped up and shouted at us to stop, pretty funny we were almost accidentally in a "secure area".  Promptly told the way we should be going we continued on, reaching a very steep set of stairs and went down to the waterfront.  Coming back up was the best work out a short sharp burn in the legs.

Still lots of snow though its spring

1/2 way down the steep stairs

We decided to catch the local bus out to the Montmorency falls at 83m they are actually higher than Niagara falls and were definitely worth the visit with the big chunks of ice still floating and the power behind the falls making us two happy girls.  After a walk on the snow we headed back and spent the afternoon just wandering the old cobbled streets, attempting to not buy too much.  That night we went out with about 10 other people from the hostel to watch a local live music act who were really good, a mixture between french and english self composed songs, in a relaxed yet popular pub.

Another morning run to start out the day, sunshine again but this time it was a really cold icy wind making us really enjoy the hot shower on return.  We didn't have any specific plan for the day except to get the ferry to see the lights at night and the Chateau frontenac (the most photographed hotel in the world) all lite up.  We wandered around the small inside markets to escape the wind and tried lots of blueberry products and of coarse maple syrup. Yum yum, real maple syrup is so good I had to bring some back with me.  As the sun went down we jumped on the ferry (which is just a local commuters ferry) and stayed on giving us sunset views and then night views back to the shore, so beautiful even if the chilly wind kept us inside apart from going out to get photos.

Vics friend Phil, drove from his home after work (around 2hours) to collect us and we all drove that night to Montreal. Arriving at his sisters place, a few beers or more (none by me still recovering from New York effects) and it was 4am before everyone went to bed....... Is this the start of the end of Montreal????

A Night in Jail!!!!!

10th,11th,12th April 2011

On Sunday we flew from Vancouver to Ottawa with my friend Brittany, picked up by her family and we went to stay the night in Arnprior.  Next day collected Victoria from the airport and we drove into Ottawa center.  Our night was to be spent in Jail!!!! (no no we didn't get up to too much mischief) it was an old jail converted into a hostel actually.  Quite an eery feeling knowing upstairs was death row and that we were actually sleeping in old jail cells, luckily no ghosts appeared to haunt us that night!

We walked through the Glebe the 'posh' area of Ottawa and then spent the afternoon wandering around the beautiful grand buildings of parliment.  That night we went to a local pub played pool and met up with some of Brittany's friends, Monday night isn't that happening in Ottawa but after my last weeks episode of drinking too much in New York I"m off alcohol for a while so it didn't bother me.

The next day Vic and I went on a free tour through parliment, great information and really interesting knowing Canada is up for reelction next month.  We went to the top of the clock tower which gave great views of Ottawa on the blue sky day we had.  We had to organise some bus trip information before heading back to Britts home town for the night.  Britt wasn't feeling the best but Vic and I went for a walk through a woodland area on the Macnamara trail, later we found out they have a problem with fisher animals who are attacking the dogs so lucky we didn't know or we would have been more jumpy (i was thinking there would be snakes and memories of back home with all the loose leafs around!)

Today we are on the first of our greyhound bus trips, heading to Quebec city though we have to change in Montreal, a 6 hour trip can't wait to get there to see the beautiful old town I keep hearing about and practise my french, where is my french translator when I need him ???   :-)
