Magical, Marvellous, Melbourne

I've managed to visit Melbourne a few times since I returned to Australia. I have family in the city and also on the mornington peninsula plus lots of friends scattered around so its always good to come back.

Over the New year period I had a few days before and after my hike to stay in Melbourne and  I was really lucky to stay at Kats place in the central city.  We had a fun few days, shopping, eating and catching up.  I had a lovely time with my Great Auntie Jean and Sandra at their home in South Yarra then Michael my cousin came up for a day and he took me kayaking along the Yarra river.  I've never seen melbourne from this perspective before with all the towering buildings looking that much more commanding from the water. It was a great work out as I haven't used these types of kayaks before and had to concentrate not to tip myself out....  Sandra and Michael swapped between cycling and kayaking as we went right out to the port area and to the Bolte bridge.

Kate currently lives in Melbourne so her Kat and I went out to dinner but also went to the dandenong ranges and hiked whats called the 1000 steps Kokoda memorial trail.  Basically like the grind for you Canadians (though easier and shorter) a lovely green area not too far from the city.

I've never really been in the city over the xmas/ new year period before and I guess I found out thats for a reason.  The city really shuts down, people flock to the coast or anywhere actually away from the city, so lots of shops were closed and the nightlife was well non existent.  While out on the town with Kat and Kate we came across this bike that had been completely knitted over.  Basically any bike that has been sittting for long without use gets 'yarn bombed' a new form of 'graffiti' and I love the idea. See link below, its become a world wide street art craze....
